I used to think that doing things and getting successful just by chance is a mere "
effortless" thing and it's
intangible, elusive and I tried my best to stay out of the way. I pictured that luck-based activities such as gambling, stock-market investing, etc. is not solid enough as a convincing effort to gain what they want, in this case money.
Well, being me, I used to believe that the traditional saying "Work hard" is the best motto, and hence throughout these years I tried my best to achieve what I think I want, for example, swimming, I tried to swim for many years back but was discouraged by the incident when I was young, my parents sent me to a local swimming class. The very first day the coach just pushed me into the water and I was so scared that I didn't appear in the next swimming lesson. From then onwards I just tell myself that Phillip, you can't swim. I stayed on that condition for many many years until last year finally I embraced myself to learn swimming again, and this time it's fruitful for me personally that I can at least swim a few feet over the water (without walking on the ground, which I used to do).
Thinking back of that moment, I used to wonder of the other kids who can swim. I asked myself, hey, why can they swim? Why can't I? I was confused and what came to my mind was, possibly they're the lucky ones who get a good coach, and possibly they're born with the skills to swim. Yeah, I convinced myself that some people are born smart, and some people are born to prosper throughout their life. Well, that's luck, I guess, that's playing the key to determine what and who we are. In fact, the black swan is talking about luck which determines the success of various deeds.
Is it God that makes miracle?
Come back to my question in its purest essence, is luck everything? Then I realized lately, that is why I blogged this, that luck could be the best thing you'd ever ask in life, but luck can be achieved. Ever heard of "Nothing is Impossible" by Nike? If on this world which God created and willed, that nothing is really impossible, therefore I can say, everything happens with a certain possibility. Every incident happens in a way that we would expected, and in different level of expectation. Let's say, do you expect the sun to rise tomorrow? Yeah, with a near 100% of confidence level. But let's say, how much do you expect your lottery ticket to win the first prize tomorrow? Perhaps 1% would be the most luxurious wish. Yet we still hope it will, and it really may happen too. Hence, if in that case, and I'm trying to say, nothing is impossible, then what is luck?
Work your brain, in simple maths, we learn that if the prediction that when you flip an even coin the probability that you get a head is 50% or 0.5 out of 1, hence the probability that you get two consecutive head is equals to 0.5x0.5=0.25 or 25%. Well, bear this in mind that this is just only a maths equation, but it helps us to understand a theory (i'm branded a philosopher, by the way) that if this thing works, and nothing is impossible, that the more you try something, the lesser the chance you will get consecutive results. Which means the more you try, the lesser the chance that an event will occur continuously.
That's what I've been trying to say, the key to luck is "The more you try, the larger the chance for you to get lucky and achieve something". How often do you try to throw a basketball into the hoop but then you just can't throw it in no matter how many times you've tried? Well, if you're sensible, you might change your posture, technique, or go out and train your physical strength, or find a coach or google it out and encountered this post, well, whatever you do, you try, and that will get you closer to your purpose.
We do things with purpose, and with purpose we try to achieve. If life is all about chance, the closest thing to success is trial I guess.
